Green Monday 3.1.09

A Greek Cypriot Holiday.
Green Monday is the Monday that kicks off the 40-day fast before the Greek Orthodox Easter, which comes one week after the Western Easter this year.  I was able to join the Mattox family with their old neighbors, Vastos and Yoda, a sweet Greek Cypriot family.  It was fun...kites are in the picture, too, not sure why, but scroll down to see some fun kite adventures.
The fast is from all meat products.  McDonalds' even adds a veggie burger to their menu for the 40 days.  Darlene sits next to Yoda and Yoda's parents.
On Green Monday, you're only supposed to eat uncut vegetables and seafood.  As you can see, Abby holds up a cucumber, I think.  Emma and I proudly display our shrimp.
The BBQ!  Shrimp, calamari, octopus...yes, octopus.  No, I didn't try any, and I'm totally fine with that.
Vastos is a great friend to Tim and Darlene.
This is Vastos' mother-in-law...such a sweet woman.  She giggled when I practiced my Greek with her, but she understood =)
Keeping warm.
Let the kite adventures begin!
I guess Tim is the champion of getting his kites up in the air every year.
He took home the title once again this Green Monday.
Emma is a faithful kite helper and flyer.
This picture makes me miss my Daddy.  I love you Papa!!!
The wind was very sporadic, but Tim still managed to get the two kites flying.
You would think we were at an air show =)
I had Mary Poppins in my head all day...
I love seeing older men flying Mickey Mouse kites - this was classic - it kind-of becomes a competition amongst the men.
Emma and I discuss the aerodynamics of the kite.
It's a kite frenzy.
Tim passes on the legacy to Abby...
...must be stuck on a rock...
Let's go fly a kite...
...up to the highest heights...
What would a see-saw be without ballerina moves?
Emma and Abby amaze me at their flexibility.
Weeeeeeee!!!
I hope you enjoyed Green Monday with us =).

Island-wide Youth Planning 2.28.09

Most of Cyprus was represented!
Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol, and Pafos...it was so cool to meet all these youth leaders from the island at our home.
I got to open us in a couple worship songs.  It's so great to sing with so many different nationalities.  Heaven is going to be RAD!
George and Anita directed the meeting.
Fellowship after...there's always tea...haha!
Talking with Natalie, who is in charge of Youth for Christ in Limassol.
This fooseball table has been such a blessing!  (thank you Brad and Tammy!)

Lice! 2.26.09

Lice!
I thought you only get lice when you're little...haha!  Not in Cyprus.
Darlene shampoos my hair with the special green goop.  Kony smelled it and ran the other way.
This was such a bonding experience.
Kill 'em...kill 'em all!
Ahhhhhhh!
Classic shot with Sponge Bob in the back.  Great job Emma!
My head is all tingly.
I look like a muffin on St. Patrick's Day.
Emma's turn...she's such a ham.
Shampoo time.
I think she's saying that her heart is sad that she has lice.
Peewuie!
Which brand lice shampoo is YOUR favorite?
Boiling my poor brush.
Darlene is so cute with her green muffin top.
Tim makes his look cool.
Ahhhhhhh!
Booboo lip Abby.
"Momma, what are you doing to me?" says Abby.
All done!  Aren't I cute?
Tim and Abby give this de-lice party two enthusiastic thumbs up.
Just to clarify...lice is quite common in Cyprus with the schools and ballet studios, etc...I used to link it with being dirty and gross, but really, it's just something you deal with in Cyprus.  I feel more like a native, now =).

Dance Competition 2.22.09

Fame! (I wish)
Darlene, Abby, Emma, Elina, and I joined a bus of about 10 other young dancers to drive to Nicosia for an Island-wide dance competition.  It was fun...long...but fun.
The dancers did one ballet piece and one contemporary piece.
Our group - we were a little early, but we had fun hanging out.
We had brochures, so we could give the dancers our own scores in our booklets.
I really do enjoy coming to ballets, performances, the theatre, symphonies, etc...It's fun to tap into the artsy side sometimes.
And the winner is...I can't pronounce their names.  No dance pictures...sorry...too dark and not allowed.  Just thought you'd like to see these.  Bye! =)
